Fellow Players!
I'd like to take this opportunity to introduce you to another FREE online game of galactic conquest, one which I have been playing religiously for about a year now...
www.starempires.com/
Unlike Stellar Empires, Star Empires is more like a board game, with sessions usually accomodating between 4 to 12 players.
The 'game board' is a hex-based stellar map (flat) of various size, depending on the session and the number of players (18 hexes across is considered a large map, but I have seen larger). Planets are scattered about the map, each with it's own Resource Unit (RU) production, and may be hidden within nebula hexes. 'Wormnet Portals' are the equivvelant of Wormholes, and provide long distance movement abilities for ships travelling through them.
Players are usually required to design their own ships (there is an online ship design computer), and their strategy is always unique.
The player-to-player interaction is usually very heavy, especially when a number of long-time veterans are in the same game
Sessions can run anywhere from 12 to 30+ turns (usually processed once per week, or once every 5 days), and the Victory Conditions will vary, depending on the session. I have seen total annihilation requirements, as well as sessions which required players to solve a puzzle in order to win. Alliances and Cabals are usually allowed, but again it depends on the session.
Sessions usually start up fairly frequently (I am currently running 2, and playing in 2), so you don't usually have to wait very long for a game to begin.
Anyway, please check it out if you are interested. New players are always welcome, and I will set up an intro game for any Stellar Empires players who wish to give it a shot before going up against the veterans.
Just register on the website, check out the rules, and give it a whirl!
Chris
