Having had a couple of unfortunate experiences (to say the least) while hyperjumping, I want to be quite sure of what I am doing. I intend jumping to a position in my sector which is 2 squares away from a system. I then want to launch a mapping probe towards that system. When I give the Hyperjump order, do I have to specify the sector (which is the one my system is already in), or is it taken as read that I will jump from my system to a specified co-ordinate in that sector? I just want to get that right to save wasting a turn! Nia

Sorry I don't understand your question.
When giving the Hyperjump command you list the exit coordinates inside the system not sector.

According to the manual, one can use a mapping probe to map a system up to 4 squares away from the ship. This implies that I can hyperjump to co-ordinates within a sector situated 4 or less squares from the system that I wish to map. If I jump straight into the system without mapping it, I'll be doing what I previously did, and end up probably losing another ship. I would be glad if you could clarify this for me please Eric.

Yes the probe has a range of 4 sector squares.

Therefore I need to enter Sector co-ordinates so that I can jump to a sector square which is 2 away from the system I wish to map. If I give system co-ordinates I will end up inside the system, and I don't know which co-ordinates are safe. Surely, that is the point of using a mapping probe?

Mapping Probes are used to get a map of the system without actually being in the system. When launching it just give the system name, I don't need coordinates for this.
As for a ship, you cannot jump in empty squares on the Sector map. You need to jump in a system and you will need to specify the desired exit location inside the system you want the ship to come out of Hyperspace.

Thanks Eric, I didn't know you couldn't jump to empty sector squares. This is the information I needed. thanks again, Nia
