Clar stared out the widow. The pre-dusk view from Nemi's bedroom was spectacular, but Clar didn't see it.
He was worried about Nemi, he knew that she might not survive her Ordeal. He to, was to undergo a right of passage today. Lift off was in a few hours, the experimental Hyperdrive could overload and vaporize everone onboard. He was doubly disappointed, he would be there when and if Nemi passed the Ordeal to become a full Gresh'Maj nor would she be able to watch the lift off.
"Come back to bed." Nemi said from the tangled mess of bedsheats.
She knew that there was a chance that neither of them would live to see another night. He Uncle had been generous enough to condone them fraternizing. But he refused to lose his best engineer to her, even though she had offered a very large dowry. He had always been jealous of her father, the great war hero, and she was quickly following in his footsteps. She had desided to break it off after things calmed down.
Besides, there was a young officer at the Airborn Forces Academy that fanced her. He was beautifull and strong and had also offered a huge dowry for her hand in marrige. It inclued a mordatly sized masion on the Western thingyula. Her family had never had a summer home and she thought her mother could use a change of seenery.
Later that night, Nemi stood outside of her Clan's temple at Treno. She was wondering what the Ordeal would be like. She heard cheering from the city square near the Imperial Palace. She looked up in time to she a thin purple streak in the nothern sky.
"I hope Clar is doing well." She thought as the guard finished their sercuraty check and let pass into the main hall.
The Nightstalker's temple enourmus. She had to wait in line to see Patriarch Nightstaker. The ancient Gresh leaned heavily on one arm of is throne. One of the bonewalkers at his feet raised up on it's rear four legs and beared it's fang as bowed before her elder.
"I have come to undergo the Three Trials of Keldar. I beleive that this Ordeal will prove that I am worthy enough to join the ranks of the Gresh'Maj."
This was the easy part, later as a part of the Ordeal, she knew she would have to resite the one hundred eight prayers of the Keldar from memory.
"Your father gained your family much renown. It has been said that you have already begun to bring his memory much prestige." the Patriarch said, in that ritual singsong voice all Kel'Maj use.
"I have been told that you completed your training at the Academy near a cycle eary. That out performed your instructor in flight training. That you have shown great inventiveness in commanding troops and won much honor at last year's wargames. It has been said that you completed the Gauntlet to pass out of basic training in record time."
"I do not deny it." Nemi replied from her prone position on the floor.
"Very well then, Prelate Arken will administer the trials. It is he who will bury you alone and in shame should you fail."
