Hi Just to say I'm looking forward to the game, although, I must admit, I haven;t yet worked out what I ought to be doing first! Any advice as to the best way to cut my teeth in the game would be most welcome, Nia.

One thing to keep in mind when starting up. Don't be intimidated by the large Game Manual. You don't need to memorize the Manual, most of it you won't use until a few turns in anyway. You'll get the hang of the Manual as turns progress.

Hi,
I've got some advice for you. I'm new myself but I'll pass on my bit of advice 'cause I think it's good stuff. My advice is make up a scout size ship design and build it. Because scouts only take 1 turn to build you can have a good size defense fleet in no time. You can't put as many weapons on the ship though. But one tip, don't put a Teleportation Device on the ship because scouts can land on planets, so you can save some space and power that way. Although the Game Manual doesn't give any commands to transfer stuff to a landed ship, but I'm hoping it's an oversight and it's possible.
Oh and also start building lots of orbital shipyards right off the bat, 'cause they take 6 turns to build, you want to plan ahead to when you will be need to build tons of ships. Get the building of the orbital shipyard in early that way you won't have to wait.

Although the Game Manual doesn't give any commands to transfer stuff to a landed ship, but I'm hoping it's an oversight and it's possible. The teleport command that allows you to transfer items from the manufacturing facility to a ship in orbit uses the Manufacturing Facility's teleporter, so using that command to transport items to a ship without a Teleportation Device is possible. That would not help you however if you need to transfer items from a ship to the planet. I never thought of scout ships having to unload cargo so it never occured to me. But I'm working on a update to the Game Manual and I'll create an command for it then.
